The Spine Unit of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology at the University Hospital Doctor Peset focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of spine infections.
As noted, one of the directors of the day, Dr. Antonio Martin, University Hospital orthopedic surgeon Dr. Peset, “In recent years spinal infections have increased slightly due to the aging population, the increase of patients immunocompromised (AIDS, post-transplant) and increased spinal surgeries performed. In addition, the increased incidence of tuberculosis in groups such as migrants, homeless people, alcoholics, drug addicts and people with AIDS, has also contributed to increased spine infections.”
Early detection of these infections, correct diagnosis (distinguished from other inflammatory diseases and tumors) and treatment by multidisciplinary teams are essential. In fact, untreated infections can cause significant deformity of the spine and severe neurological deficit, particularly paraplegia or quadriplegia.
